Hopes have faded of finding any remaining survivors of a massive landslide in Guatemala that killed at least 86 people, with hundreds still missing.
On Saturday, relatives of the victims shovelled alongside diggers through the mounds of earth that destroyed homes in Santa Catarina Pinula on the southeastern flank of Guatemala City after Thursday night’s collapse of a hillside.
“Six of my family members are missing – my parents and four siblings,” Elvin Sin told Al Jazeera.
“I haven’t been able to rest and won’t until I see them again. But asking to see them alive is a lot. They are buried under 15 metres of dirt.”
About 350 people are still unaccounted for, authorities said.
Clutching photos of loved ones, family members stood in line outside a makeshift morgue near the excavation site to see if they recognised any of the corpses.

At the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington, U.S. President Barack Obama on Saturday (April 30) poked fun at himself in a video spoof about his retirement. During the pre-produced video, Obama attempts to obtain a D.C. driver’s license and is required to produce a birth certificate. It was a reference to opponents, including current Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, who alleged that the U.S. leader was not born in the U.S. and was ineligible to be president. Obama then turns to former Speaker of the House John Boehner, a Republican who was often on the opposite side of the political fence, for advice. Boehner joins him in the White House movie room and attempts to shine a positive light on retirement and tempts Obama to smoke a cigarette, a reference to rumors that the president smoked in secret. The video closes with the two walking the White House halls, red wine in Boehner’s hand, seemingly embracing the future together.

The Pashupati Area Development Trust will be launching the operation of electric crematorium building constructed on the premises of the Pashupati Aryaghat area tomorrow.Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Ananda Prasad Pokharel, who is also the chairperson of the PADT, is set to inaugurate the two electric cremation machines installed in the building by cremating as many bodies kept in freeze of the forensic department of TU Teaching Hospital, Maharajgunj.PADT member secretary Govinda Tandon said both of the machines installed in the first phase of the programme will officially come into operation as part of hi-tech project of the government. Though the idea of installing electric crematorium was conceived in 1982, it took nearly 34 years to implement the project.According to the PADT, it takes 3-4 hours to cremate a body on a traditional funeral pyre but the electric cremation machine can reduce the body to ashes within 45 minutes. It is eco-friendly and prevents environment from being polluted. Despite the operation of the electric crematorium, kin of the deceased may also opt for traditional wooden crematorium. The hi-tech system is also cost-effective. “It costs around Rs 10,000 to cremate a body in traditional funeral pyre compared to Rs 3,000 in the electric crematorium,” informed the PADT officials.
Kathmandu: India has completed a major part of the work on a railway link with landlocked Nepal that is expected to promote tourism and boost trade.
Sixty-eight per cent of work on the Indian side of the Jogbani-Biratnagar line has been completed though Nepal has finished only 20 per cent of the construction on its side, said a statement issued by the Indian Embassy on Friday.
Nepalese and Indian officials met here on Tuesday and discussed issues related to two projects that are expected to benefit Nepal by boosting trans-border trade and promoting tourism.
Besides the Jogbani-Biratnagar railway link, the two sides reviewed progress and discussed pending issues related to the Jaynagar-Bijalpura-Bardibas railway link.
Preparatory works like construction of station building, staff quarters and a bridge are in progress for the Jayanagar Bijalpura Bardibas link.
Nepal assured the Indian side that land for the projects will be acquired and handed over to state-run IRCON at the earliest to expedite work, the statement said.
“Both sides have agreed to provide all necessary support to expedite implementation of these important projects,” it said.

According to local media reports the family had become suspicious of the maid, for undisclosed reasons, and installed a secret camera in the kitchen.
The camera captured two women going about their daily chores while one of them prepared a drink.
She is seen stirring it and then heading away before the second maid walks over to the juice.
Before she gets there however she quickly pulls a beaker of what purportedly contains her own urine from her trousers.
She is then clearly seen topping up the drink with the liquid.
The video concludes with the woman returning to carry on with her job. She can be seen preparing food in the background.
Speaking to local news outlets, the head of the family, who chose to keep the identity of his employee secret, revealed his shock when watching the footage back.
He also sent a message of warning for other local people to be cautious of the behaviour of their maids.

The Central Investigation Bureau of Nepal Police has appealed to all users of social networking site, especially Facebook, to be cautious when posting personal information on the internet. The warning of the supreme investigating agency of the law enforcement agency comes in the wake of growing incidents of fraudulent and other criminal activities involving social media. SP Tarini Prasad Lamsal warned that cybercriminals could spread malicious links to many people and cheat them with a phoney account showing themselves as genuine and moneyed persons. Police arrested Bishnu Kumar Tamang aka Amit and Jivan (27) of Nuwakot for swindling over a dozen women of more than Rs 10 million collectively with the promise of marrying or taking them to America posing as US Army officers. The Metropolitan Police Range, Kathmandu nabbed Tamang from Samakhusi after it received complaints against him. “Facebook and other social networking sites are an easy way for frauds and scammers to reach networks of people. You should not accept the friend request of a person who you do not recognise,” suggested SP Lamsal.@thehimalayantimes.
Five years ago, Rob O’Neill chomped on a sandwich watching television at Bagram Airfield. Usama bin Laden’s dead body lay on a table next to him.
O’Neill was the reason bin Laden lay lifeless on that table May 1, 2011. He explained the details of the death of the world’s most notorious terrorist in a matter-of-fact manner years later to relatives of 9/11 victims.
“I explained how I went into a room and I saw him and he was standing 3 feet in front of me and he was a threat and I shot him,” O’Neill said Sunday on “Fox and Friends.”
O’Neill said he and his fellow Seal Team 6 members were still in the uniforms they wore on the mission when President Obama announced the death on television.
“I heard him say Usama bin Laden, I looked at Usama bin Laden – I thought, ‘How in the world did I get here from Butte, Montana?’” O’Neill said.
Even half a decade after bin Laden was taken out, little-known information about the operation and the hunt that led up to it is trickling in. O’Neill revealed Sunday that the much-publicized kidney ailment bin Laden was said to have and the dialysis machine he was said to have with him were merely counterintelligence myths propagated to weed out sources that were lying.
Bin Laden’s death, however, has not decreased the threat from Islamists.
John Brennan was the chief counterterrorism adviser to President Obama when O’Neill’s elite team stormed bin Laden’s compound in Pakistan. Brennan is now the CIA director and faces a new nemesis, ISIS, and a new wily figurehead, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.
